This and That

It's been a couple of months since the last post, and in that time we've had abundant harvests of carrots, potatoes, olallieberries and apricots, the lettuce has gone away with the heat, and we've faced smoke from several close-but-not-too-close brush fires.

So why the void in communication? Nothing earth-shattering. I noticed the comments dwindling on each blog post and so more and more it felt like I was shouting into the void, the same issue I had when writing my weekly newspaper column. People rarely write in to tell you when they enjoy a newspaper column or have a thought about it. Letters to the editor pretty much come in after you've said something that's gotten readers riled up, and so it's probably the same thing with blogging.

Spring is also the busiest time of year around here. It's not only around the homestead, it's socially, financially, and work-wise as well. And so writing about living tends to take a back seat to just living. Someday I will find a way to manage the period from about April 15 to May 31 but this year, it once again became a time of trying to find time for things.

In the meantime, here are some pics of what we've been up to.

It was an abundant spring.

Mother Nature graced us with her beauty.

Planting, harvesting and preserving.
As usual, too many one one crop. Luckily my friends like carrots.

The row covers worked out nicely, kept a lot of insect and wind problems at bay.

Now we have smoky sunrises.....

and sunsets.

  1. Welcome back. Good for you, having a successful garden. I thought perhaps you packed up and moved away. Summertime is just yuck, and now the fires again. I'm dreaming of Autumn, as I always do this time of year.

    1. Thanks Denise! I'm dreaming of autumn as well, these fires just make me so sad. Too much destruction of the beauty around us. The garden is a real bright spot though and very cheering!

  2. I enjoyed your post and admired all of your garden produce.
I'm just about to transplant or think carrots myself. Terrible fires in British Columbia and we hope we don't get the smoke. First rain in awhile here. Thank heavens! Ann

    1. Hi Ann! Thanks. Sorry to hear about your fires, I hate to hear about an area as gorgeous as BC burning. Hope you get more rain very soon! We won't have any until November so I'm envious of anyone who gets summer rain. : )

  3. I attempted to grow veggies last year and failed miserably. Not enough motivation to succeed is my reasoning. Farmers Market supports farmers, provides fresh veggies of my choice, and it's easier. I admire anyone who can successfully grow their own food.

I hear ya about lack of blogging motivation. Life for me is quiet and productive, not exactly the most intriguing topic to write about.

Glad to see that you're still here somewhat. I'm here whenever you are, whether I leave a trace or not.

    1. Thank you so much Connie. I keep up with your blog too, with your rose work and renovations I think you can take an excused pass from the vegetable gardening lol. Routine does not always lend itself to writing, you're right. I'm going to make an attempt to blog more and try and see more "newness" in what I do. Even if its just taking and posting more pics.

  5. Our little corner of the country is quickly becoming a place where city people move to the country, to big, plastic houses with yards that used to be a corn field. Changes the dynamic of an area ... and not in a good way.

  6. I read everything you post through Bloglovin' though I'm not much of a commenter; sometimes I read the blogs right before they disappear from Bloglovin', which makes me about three weeks late.
