Homegrown

Nothing like shopping in the garden for dinner....which was a generous slice of frittata, made with freshly laid eggs, plus harvested-today spinach and onions.  Over the last decade or so, eating food that was collected or harvested 10 minutes before dinner has gotten a bit more routine for me, and I will admit I don't feel the same beginner's thrill I did when first doing it.

But I'll tell you what: it's no less delicious than it was the first time.

  1. Love the plate! I'm still new at growing my own food so it still excites me a bit :) my newest joy is growing my own potatoes..who knew how much fin it would be when you stick your hands in the dirt and pull up a ton of potatoes..lol

It's the simple things sometimes :)

    1. Oh, I so agree! And fresh potatoes are a thousand times more tasty than what's in the store. I couldn't believe it the first time I had a Yukon Gold that came straight from the ground and into the oven, served up with a little butter on it...it was truly the most amazing thing I'd ever eaten.

  2. I was down in South Carolina and found a farmer at the market who had tiny baby potatoes and AH they were so good! So exciting to be in the growing season and getting delicious rewards for your hard work!

    1. Amen to that! I'm happy to report that my son Groceries will be reporting to South Carolina for submarine school, meaning when he graduates I will get to come see it! Very excited, as it's one state I've never been to.

    2. Oh wow! You'll love it! probably in Charleston at the Citadel? Depending on the month, the most bizarre thing will be the humidity for you! But there's not really a bad time to be down there. I've been going to Hilton Head Island my whole life and stop in Charleston often. HHI is fiercely protected from excessive development (though it is not bare bones by any stretch) and is such a beautiful place. The restaurants are crap though. Charleston, on the other hand, has spectacular restaurants. Also if you're going to be up and down I-95 (chances are good you will), leave time in your schedule and room in your suitcase to stop at the Le Creuset outlet in Yemassee. It's a stone's throw off 95 and sometimes has incredible inventory and deals. It can be hit or miss though. It's not like an outlet mall outlet, it's actually a real outlet as LC American distribution is nearby. There is also a good LC outlet that IS a normal outlet mall type and it's still very good, and that's closer to HHI off 278. I'm a very good tour guide but with a very narrow scope! Haha.
