For some reason this butterfly I saw today reminded me a little of Salvador Dali's "Persistence of Memory." Maybe it was just the similarity of color tone or the little circular shapes on the wings and their blue-ish tinge sort of resembling the watches in the Dali piece, but I thought he was beautiful. And since the Dali piece is one of my favorites, I was suitably impressed with his rendition.

The butterfly is exquisite! I much prefer him to the painting :) it's funny I remember a print of that painting was hanging in one of my art teacher's rooms--maybe when I was 8--and I just hated it. It feels so oppressive to me. More so now than ever! Time melts fast enough on its own. I suppose that's the brilliant thing about art, we all have individual relationships with it. I have a beautiful plein air impressionist painting of a woman in huge golden field. I feel so calm and peaceful when I look at it. My sister always says "that poor girl is so sad and alone just wandering around in that field!" Haha!
ReplyDeleteThat's so interesting! I've always felt a resonance with Dali's work, although I can't really say why. In some ways, it reminds me of free-verse poetry. But you are right, art is VERY subjective. I am not sure I could have this painting hanging in my home or office, but I appreciate it when I do see it in a gallery or someplace like that. Funny about the girl in the field...where some see peaceful solitude, others see loneliness. Interesting!
DeleteBeautiful butterfly!
ReplyDeleteAs for the painting, I have always been fascinated with it for some reason. I don't know why - melting watches - so unusual.
I too am drawn to the painting, Molly, although I can't say why. But while I love butterflies regardless of their coloration, this one was especially cool to me because it seemed a little like life imitating art!
